Roofing underlayment is an often under-discussed component of a roofing system. Although concealed by asphalt shingles or other roofing membranes, it plays an integral role in the longevity and stability of your entire residential or commercial structure. It is a waterproofing barrier that is installed directly onto the roof deck. There are three types of underlayment used by roofing contractors: asphalt-saturated felt, non-bitumen synthetic and rubberized asphalt.
Asphalt-Saturated Felt
Asphalt-saturated felt is water-resistant and was the most popular underlayment option until synthetic materials started to gain traction. Sometimes referred to as felt paper or tar paper, this roofing material is made from plant fibers, polyester, asphalt or bitumen.
Roofing underlayment became a standard roofing component because it provides an extra layer of protection that shingles alone can’t supply.
Non-Bitumen Synthetic Underlayment
Nowadays, roof replacement experts prefer using the non-bitumen synthetic underlayment type. Its basemat is saturated in asphalt and reinforced with fiberglass. The fiberglass addition gives many synthetic materials excellent tear resistance and stability. Like felt paper, synthetic underlayment is applied across the entire roof deck. It is recommended to be used with waterproof products.
Rubberized Asphalt
Rubberized asphalt contains higher percentages of asphalt and rubber polymers. This makes the material waterproof and generally more expensive than its counterparts. It comes with a sticky rear surface that provides the waterproof seal between the underlayment and a care roof deck. Rubberized asphalt is particularly useful for wet regions on the roof, including valleys and other protrusions. This addition prevents rain water from seeping into your roofing system and causing moisture issues like mold.
